We built a very simple system based on MySQL and Java - takes a very simple db table with student names/emails/box numbers and another with package information.
It creates a package entry with a UID, date, student mailbox number, shipper, package location (where the mailroom is storing it), etc. At the same time it emails the student informing him or her that a package has arrived along with the ID, and prints a page with two package labels (which get taped to the package - front and top) and two cards, one to go in the student box and one as a paper-trail.
The other function is just a look-up function so workers can find the package for the student by looking up either student name or package ID.
Very simple. My student workers came up with the idea and ran with it. Only took a week or so to get it working, along with the input and the print-out information.
Unfortunately, I can't give code - but honestly, it's really pretty straightforward stuff.
There was a question about privacy and the information, but since all of our email addresses are based on publicly available information (first.last.classyear@) and it's only available to mailroom workers, it was not deemed a problem.
Give it to your students - let them sink their teeth into it and watch what comes out! :D
