Hi, Greg,
Your engineers are offering an alternative using equipment you already
have on hand, so is there a way you can take a sample of guinea pigs
(sorry, "willing volunteers") and try it out? Watch particularly how it
affects the performance of streaming video.
We still shape our traffic, but we've almost got enough bandwidth to get
away without it most of the time. But we're using it to prioritize some
traffic and reduce or deny others. For that sort of work, you still need
a DPI box.
Of course the other alternative is one of the "equalizer" style boxes.
They have many fans, and they appear to be rather less expensive.
