At the University of Chicago, we're trying to do very similar things
in getting SLIP (and later PPP) ready for campus rollout.  We've just
started getting a list of initializations together.  I'll keep you posted;
it would be great if we could share information on this.

I supervise the technical support hotline at the U. of C., and we're
looking forward to the huge number of calls on SLIP.  In order to
avoid this as much as possible, we're going to include intialization
strings for about 6 standard modems for the Mac, at various speeds
and with various compressions, etc.  These will be our "supported"
set; if someone has something else, we'll give them a document on how
to create their initialization string themselves.  Unless, of course,
a number of people call with that same modem and we decide to add it
to the "supported" list.  This is only for the Macintosh side.  We
have yet to tackle the DOS/Windows side....
