Phew! All this discussion of modems and busy signals really hits
close to home! :-)

We here at Duke currently have 64 Telebit 14.4 modems (upgrading to 28.8)
and are installing 64 more 28.8 as we speak. We tie all of these into
Xylogics Annex terminal servers. We support SLIP, PPP, ARA, TN3270 and
terminal access via the same phone number. User authentication is (will be
soon) via Kerberos to our public Unix system.

We are up to 5,000+ calls per day now (on the 64 lines) and expect to
see that jump significantly when we add the extra lines. Check out
our real time stats via Mosaic at url http://www.netcom.duke.edu.

We have a 20 minute inactivity timeout for terminal lines and have
instituted timeouts on SLIP and PPP as well. We've been able to set the
Xylogics up so that they can tell the difference between idle sessions
and active session....of course, simply setting Eudora to poll your mailbox
every 15 minutes will keep the link up. We're thinking of setting a
max time limit regardless of activity to keep the lines free. We too
get swamped with "the *(&*&( lines are busy from 7pm to 4am" email notes.
:-) :-)

Even with the low price of high speed modems now, we find that the
majority of our connections are from users running 2400bps...go figure.

Anyways, be sure to check out our web page for more info.

Cheers,

Bob Currier
