The main problems with external adaptors are, one: that they are nearly twice
the price of real NIC cards and, two: that their performance is quite a bit
worse.

We sell 3COM 3C509 adaptors for PCs and Asante adaptors for Macs. We make the
policy statement that those are the adaptors that we support and any
connections to the network with anything else is unsupported and liable to
disconnection without notice if any problems are caused by someone's oddball
el-cheapo adaptor card. We do also support some external adaptors (parallel,
SCSI, PCMCIA) for notebooks and computers that don't support the standard
adaptor cards.
