Here's the ethics statement that we incorported into our Mac resnet
manual. Since this Sept. is our first foray into resnet services, the
code below has not been tested or challenged.
We decided on the position of NOT banning student file servers, just
making certain that they run "clean" and don't misrepresent themselves
as an official service of the College itself.
I'd welcome informed comment and critique as we prepare for the second
edition of the manuals.
-------------------------
Network Integrity
You may not tamper with any network cabling or routing devices beyond
the wall plate in your room. Any problems with these devices or
cabling will be serviced by Telecommunications. Likewise, you will
not extend the network from your wall plate to another room or
building. Incorrect cabling can lead to significant lightning damage
risk.
Network Security and Personal Privacy
You may not possess or use any software or hardware designed to
disrupt the security of the campus network and all devices attached to
the network. Likewise, you may not engage in any activities designed
to spy on the network traffic of other users.
File Service
System 7 permits your Mac to function as a network file server or
on-line bulletin board as well as a personal computer. If you choose
to activate file service:
a. You must choose a name that is not misleading.
Don't name your server "President's office" unless
authorized by that office. If in doubt, contact CITS for advice.
b. You are responsible for the security of your system.
If you misconfigure the file sharing, others may be able to mess up
your computer.
c. You are responsible for the content of files that you distrbute.
For example, current laws permit you to be sued for libel,
invasion of privacy, software piracy, pornography, and other
such crimes. Similarly, you will not use file service to
support or encourage plaigiarism, cheating, or other
violations of campus ethics.
Money-Making Activities
You may not use College resources for money-making activities since
these can jeopardize Skidmore's "nonprofit" status. For example, you
cannot use College printers for commercial word processing, nor can
you use the network to advertize commercial services.
Software piracy
You will not use the networks to engage in software piracy or
copyright infringements.
Network-Based Games
All use of network-based games is strictly forbidden. While
appealing, these games generate massive network traffic that disrupts
the activities of other users across the campus network.
Personal Responsibility
You are personally responsible for any activities originating from
your network connection. Do not permit visitors or friends to engage
in mischief on your system.
Violations of these rules will be reported to the appropriate campus
judicial body. Punishments can include disconnection from the campus
network.
CITS may disconnect a user from the network if his or her activities
present an immanent danger. In these cases, the problem will be
reported promptly to the appropriate judicial body and CITS will abide
by the judgement of that group.
