We are just about to take "delivery" of our first fully wired hall of residence
and are not at all sure what services to offer the residents. The options
seem to be a full ethernet service using managed 10baset hubs; a simple
serial connection with slip/ppp as options; and appletalk via arap for
the richer students with macs.
We are terrified of the work involved in fitting ethernet boards to a random
collection of grotty pcs made by every known manufacturer. how do others
cope with this? we are also concerned about the effort involved in software
support of PCs which are networked.
SLIP/PPP we have found does not work on many cheaper/older pcs with slow
UARTS. is this just the LAN Workplace for DOS driver or is it inherent?
Any views/experiences, especially where PCs are involved would be gratefully
received.
