Hello,
We are connecting three of our residence hall buildings to the network this
summer. I am trying to decide which terminal servers to buy to satisfy any
potential serial connection requests. At the same time I am trying to decide
whether to offer SLIP/PPP connections to students, which would potentially
require a purchase of more sophisticated terminal server equipment. I have a
few questions that I would welcome any comments/information on. Thanks.
From your experience, does a number of requested/used serial lines have a
tendency to decrease in favor of direct Ethernet connections? Is it a fast
process? Do you offer SLIP/PPP connectivity? Are they dial-up connections to
a host, or hardwired connections to a terminal server? What terminal server? If
a terminal server, how do you deal with assigning IP addresses? Once the dorms
have a direct Ethernet connectivity, is SLIP connectivity still in demand?
Thanks again,
