At our university there were and are some initiatives. Even yesterday
we had a student wishing to talk about some netwerk he was planning.
The main problem here is the size of the networks. Most
studentnetworks span only one floor or one building. There is only one
network operated by students that spans a couple of buildings. They
are also good organized (because that is the main problem with that
kind of networks; students leave...) and we are cooperating with them.
The wanted to help form the studentcounseling group and we accepted
that gladly. They know students best and they are willing to work hard
for all students.

One major argument is that soon other universities will start
providing all kinds of network related stuff for there student. The
university with the best network (besides all education reasons) will
get the most students. A good point when there will be less and less
people to fill the classes.
