Laura -

You asked "if you build it, will they come"? And my experience
right now is that if they are told what it is and what they can do with it
then yes, they will come. We are just now trying to bring up the
Residence Hall Network here at Oregon State and I at first had no interest
in the net. This bothered me because I thought that the students would be
anxious for this kind of access. Well they are but you have to educate
them as to what access they are getting. When I use phrases like "the
onramp to the information highway" I get the reaction I expected (and
didn't get) when I said 10baseT....10mbs. One of my favorite demos is for
MOSAIC and on the NCSA demo document the picture of Al Gore sort of puts a
pop culture stamp of approval on this networking stuff. A favorite
anecdote that I like to tell about this is that when I was explaining to a
friend of mine who is a Newspaper reporter about the internet and GOPHER,
he said that he expected to see a picture of Al Gore waving hello. Well
with MOSIAC I say...here it is, the Vice President waving hello (he's not
waving, but the effect is the same).
