I've heard several poeople bemoan the difficulties involved in getting a
DOS/Windows machine running IP software. We've had the same problems here,
too.
For ethernet, we've found an easier way to network PC's (at least, *I* think
its easier. Can't speak for others, you know.). We are currently installing
ODI on ethernet-connected PC's, and using a public-domain version of
WinSockets for windows IP handling.
The result is pretty nice - once you have the software configured, you can
run WinSocket compliant software without further configuration. So far, we
have collected several pubilc-domain versions of gopher, telnet, and news
clients. And, you can run Mosaic with it.
The downside is the several layers of drivers you must install. There is the
Link Support Layer (LSL), the hardware driver, the ODI packet driver, and
Winpacket.
I don't know just this might fit in with using a BOOTP server.
