At SSU we have LocalTalk in ten resident halls for a total of 300+ jacks.
All connection points are active, and we provide a handout with detailed
instructions on how to connect a Mac to the network (go to store, buy
phone-net connector, plug it into hole with a picture of a printer on it,
open the chooser, etc...).

When a student finishes following those directions, he should have our file
server mounted on his desktop. On that file server is a README file that
explains how to install MacTCP and get the Internet software running. All
told, a student who has no idea what he is doing can get his Macintosh on the
network and be using the Library's card catalog remotely in 30min.

Of course students can call us if they have problems. At the moment we only
have six hours of technical support available each week. It seems adequate
enough for getting people connected, but not for teaching people about
Internet resources, software, etc..

The two biggest problems we have are:

1) People don't read directions.
2) People don't read directions carefuly.
3) People read directions carefully and then don't follow them.
4) Sometimes there are inits in the system folder that conflict with MacTCP.
