CMU's Data Communications group currently provides 4mb/s Token Ring
and LocalTalk in all of it's 30+ on-campus housing units. Five of the
dorms also have Annex terminal service and another five dorms also have
10Base-T ethernet service. All of the services are provided via the IBM
cabling system which is overkill but was part of a grant from IBM years
ago. Students are responsible for costs from the outlet to their
computer.
We have recently allocated capital funds to provide base level
10base-T in the remainder of the dorms for Fall of 1994. We will also
be phasing out the Token Ring networking at that time to help simplify
support (finacial, staffing, rack space, ect.).
To further simplify, we are considering an alternative of elliminating
LocalTalk (not at this time). A recent win is for Macs that cannot
accept an ethernet card could now use Farallon's 10Base-T etherwave
product that connects via the printer port.
In addition we have a high speed dialup modem available.
