Has anyone who has a residential computing network up and running
implemented a student leasing program?
If so, is it a traditional, voluntary lease where students can rent a
computer for a semester or a year just like any other appliance, or it is a
"mandatory lease" where the machine is put into the room for every student
in a wing/floor/hall and they are all billed for it.
And if it's a traditional leasing program, can you describe the following
aspects of your program?
o Do students lease for a semester/trimester/quarter or for a year?
o If the program has been running for more than one semester/trimester/quarter/
year, have many students changed their leased configurations after the
first lease period?
o Do they have set hardware bundles (how many) or do they build custom
systems piece by piece?
o How many machines per semester/trimester/quarter/year are you leasing;
what percentage of the network-able students is that?
o Is the system working? Do students seem to be pleased with the leasing?
o Is the leasing program set up as a money-maker, to break even, or as a
subsidized program?
o Is the leasing done by an entity at the University (who -- User Services?)
or by an outside interest?
Thanks to everyone who answers,
Mike!
