Subject: Residential Computing Symposium
Hi All,
I announced last week at EDUCOM Stanford's interest in hosting a
symposium on residential computing. This event would serve as
another venue for us to get together and to discuss topics on Naomi's
list. I feel that Stanford serves as an excellent location for such
an event not only because we like to show off our program but also
due to our proximity to a number of computing and networking vendors
who have shown interest in supporting a symposium. Also, we have
very nice weather and San Francisco is just a half-hour away.
My initial plan is to host this event in early summer and house
attendees in one of Stanford's networked residence halls. Depending
on the number of attendees I would like to provide a computer in
every room from the pool of Macintoshes that make up Stanford's
residence clusters. This way folks could communicate electronically
and sample academic courseware over the network. Discussion topics
could mirror those on this mail list and some sort of on-line
call-for-proposals would generate presentations. I would also like
to involve faculty at Stanford who have created or are in the process
of creating academic projects that take advantage of residence hall
networking.
I am about to head off on a week and a half vacation but will return
on November 10th. I just wanted to assure people that we are going
ahead with the initial thinking and scheming, and provide some food
for discusion on this whole idea. I hope that my mail will be
overflowing with comments and ideas when I return.
Jeff Merriman
Director of Residential Computing
