Clarification regarding DOT-CO TLD - and another controversy

I should probably clarify an aspect of the DOT-CO TLD that
I was discussing in:

It is true that .CO is a preexisting country code top level domain
(ccTLD) that has been around for many years (officially vended
to Colombia).
However, its new "re-launch" as a general availability TLD -- complete
with the usual "gold rush" nonsense and promotional mumbo-jumbo, along
with the new rush of defensive registrations, means that -- as far as
I'm concerned -- it's completely fair to consider it like a brand-new
generic TLD for all practical purposes.
ICANN is preparing to unleash hundreds of new TLDs on the Net,
possibly that many within the first year alone.
I stand by everything I said in http://bit.ly/d88NFP as to why
this is bad for the Net and most of its users.
By the way, a new controversy has arisen over recommendations for
"background checks" associated with ICANN rules for new TLD
applicants, with complaints that these are prejudice, with parties
citing the "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"
credo.
That TLDs have been dragged into this sort of political muck is
yet another example of how the entire domain name environment
is heading rapidly off the tracks and over the cliff.
