Moving Beyond Domain Names

Greetings. I'll make this short and sweet for a change -- though
there will be *much* more to say later. This is really just
a heads-up.
After digesting the latest ongoing media reports on the possible
re-re-re-consideration of the dot-ex-ex-ex TLD by ICANN (I've already
pointed you at my 2005 open letter "Why 'Dot-Ex-Ex-Ex' is for Chumps"
[ http://bit.ly/bRtaFj ], and Huffington gave a good summary of the
situation today in http://bit.ly/9yRR0u ), I find myself again
considering a rather radical concept.
We may well have reached (or already passed) the point where we should
be working seriously toward the ultimate elimination of domain names
as the primary user-facing addressing aspect of the World Wide Web as
perceived by most of its users.
I won't even start down the lengthy list of relevant supporting
arguments in this message, but I'm sure that many of you can cite your
own without major prompting.
Discussion on all sides of this topic is invited.
