Greetings. A quick followup to "A History Lesson: Microsoft Windows -
"Exit, Stage Right" -- just to keep the historical record straight.
In the original text, I incorrectly typoed that Apple's OS was based
on Linux. This of course is incorrect -- it's actually developed from
NetBSD (a different tree of open-source Unix-inspired OS than Linux)
and, to be even more specific, CMU Mach.
The "Linux vs. BSD" battle isn't appropriate for more discussion
during a holiday.
I also received a couple of messages from mainframe guys who took
issue with my characterization of mainframes' decline, but after all I
did note that they're still around.
In fact, they're still burning the megawatts here in California and
causing all kinds of mischief running ancient COBOL payroll programs
for the state government! But that saga too, can wait.
Again, Happy Thanksgiving.
