Sen. Markey grandstanding over TSA knives rule change

"Bill would take an ax to new TSA knife rule"

http://j.mp/10DDkVj (Politico)

"A bipartisan pair of lawmakers is attempting to override the TSA's
decision to let commercial air passengers carry small knives and other
formerly banned items like toy bats, hockey sticks and pool cues."

 - - -

Markey and his colleague are grandstanding, nothing more. TSA knows
that flight safety is not enhanced by trying to keep small knives off
planes -- exactly the opposite due to time wasted by screeners on such
items that could be better spent concentrating on serious threats.
The purpose of airline screening is to keep the flight safe -- not to
prevent every possible injury to passengers -- who can clobber each
other with umbrellas and stab each other with pens as well! Note also
that (a) this change would simply bring the U.S. into line with
foreign carrier rules (b) the largest airline pilot union supports the
change [they understand what flight safety means] and (c) Markey was
even opposed to the rule change that allowed small scissors back on
board.
