Verizon running pattern match hashes against users' stored data
http://j.mp/13ExszE (ars technica)
Verizon officials would not go into the particulars of how it scans
customers' content. "All we do is follow the law," said Verizon
spokesperson Linda Laughlin. But they acknowledged that the company
uses a database of mathematical fingerprints of known images of
children generated by the National Center for Missing and Exploited
Children, using a technology called PhotoDNA, which was donated by
Microsoft just over a year ago.

This confirms my speculation of several days ago regarding this case.
The broader question of course, is how such technology might be
silently applied by services for other classes of users' stored data.
