USPS tries end run around Congress to stop Saturday delivery and mail
pickups, but Congress unlikely to buy in

http://j.mp/XoqWVo (Postal News)

"Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on
Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in
response to the United States Postal Service's announcement today that
it intends to end Saturday mail delivery in August ..."

Congress has dropped the ball on dealing with USPS, but the postal
service's attempt at a legalistic end run around Congress is likely to
make things worse -- I would not be surprised to see this all dragged
into federal court quickly. And in fact, after pushing so hard to get
people to depend on package pickups instead of going into crowded post
offices, this move by the USPS is going to hurt a lot of small
businesses in particular. I think this might be only the first
chapter in the Saturday delivery saga. Congress does not like being
played this way. We shall see.
