F.C.C. Describes 911 and Cellphone Problems

http://j.mp/PmjziU (New York Times)

"Cellphone calls in the Northeast region were continuing to fail
Wednesday because one-quarter of the transmission sites in areas
ravaged by Hurricane Sandy were knocked out and many of those are
not expected to come back online for several days at least,
    government officials said. "

I frequently remind people thinking about going cell-only with no
landlines, that cell service is usually the first to become overloaded
and fail during major disasters. Microcell batteries often run out
very quickly after power goes down, as well.
