Fired lifeguards told to "call 911" if someone drowning outside their zones!

"Jeff Ellis Associates, an Orlando-based company, is contracted by the
city and paid to man the beaches, but only in the most populated
spots. When asked what the lifeguards are supposed to do when someone
is drowning outside the guarded zones, the men explained they were
told to call 911. Former Vice Mayor of Hallandale Beach Bill Julian
was outraged over what is happening on the beaches in his city."

I'm sorry to darken your 4th with another of these stories. But I
find this saga particularly infuriating. It is illustrative of both
what is so very right about this country: the actions of those young
lifeguards, and of what is so very wrong about it -- people who put
rules, money, and fear of litigation explicitly ahead of human lives.
I believe this story can also stand as a dramatic analogue for much
else that has gone utterly insane here in the USA, in the healthcare
arena and elsewhere.
