Supreme Court prepares to effectively murder vast numbers of people?

"The Supreme Court on Tuesday ended two hours of arguments about the
key component of the nation's health-care overhaul, with the court's
dominant conservatives appearing deeply skeptical that the
Constitution gives Congress the power to compel Americans to either
purchase health insurance or pay a penalty."

Mainstream media commentators are unlikely to be straightforward about
this. Luckily, that doesn't include me. If the Supreme Court strikes
down health care reform, vast numbers of people will die who would otherwise
have lived. Obviously, this will not include the Justices, who have no
health care provisioning concerns whatsoever.
Without the individual mandate -- which was originally a GOP idea by
the way! -- any plan for universal health insurance becomes
impractical. People with preexisting conditions will again be denied
coverage. Sick people will be dropped from policies. Rates for
everyone -- particularly in the individual health care market for
those who can get insurance at all -- will be even higher than today,
so high that even *more* people will either be unable to afford it or
will be so underinsured that they will be unable to seek routine
treatments that might avoid catastrophic illnesses later. This is not
merely theoretical. I know people right now who have no insurance,
who desperately need it and can't get it, and are getting sicker every
day as a result. The theory that you can just show up at an emergency
room and get free treatment is bull. It doesn't work that way. Try
it and see what happens to your life.
The United States of America is the laughingstock of the world for how
it has allowed the medical industry, the insurance industry, and the
financial industry to stomp vast numbers of the population into the
dirt for the benefit of the few. And now the Supreme Court appears
to be likely to soak that dirt with our blood.
