Bizarre labels problem on GMAIL
I just discovered a number of my (many) labels on Gmail to have been
suddenly renamed. E.g., to strings like "Teacher", "I'm hungry",
"Nail". In one case the color of the label was changed as well.
This must have very recently happened, and the 28 day log shows no
unusual login activity from any third party, nor have there been any
security notifications.
Even more, there are clear signs that this is a Gmail fault:
When I went to edit the changed labels to put them back to what
they're supposed to be, the editing box showed the CORRECT label
and wouldn't let me save it, claiming it was already in use.
E.g.: Label should read CAT but is displaying on list and on messages
as DOG. Go to edit it, and the edit field shows CAT! You can't save
it, because you get an error sayings it's already CAT, when it is
displaying as DOG.
In a couple of cases I was able to immediately rename to a third name
and then rename back again to the correct name, but in at least one case
it initially refused to let me go back to the correct label name still
insisting it was already in use.
This was all under Chrome.
Very annoying.
