After many years of disputes, Verasign launches .web TLD
The battle over .web goes back many, many years, with disputes over
Verasign's original winning bid of $135 a decade ago apparently now
settled. Since it will not be covered by the same federal agreement that
controls the pricing of .com, it is expected that Versign will charge
premimum prices for .web registrations, perhaps after introductory
discounts. It is also widely anticipated that, even with Verasign
controlling .web, that it will quickly fill with scammers, phishers, and
other garbage, and quickly become a candidate for widespread blocking.
