More on DirecTV-Echostar/Dish/Sling merger + AT&T sells interest in DirecTV

I'm being asked if I think the government will try to block the
DirecTV/Echostar (Dish, Sling TV) merger. I tend to doubt it. They did
block a merger attempt between the two (and Echostar had to pay a very
large breakup fee as a result) back in 2002, but the TV market was
very different then in so many ways.

For what it's worth (not much at all) DirecTV claims it will continue
to support the Dish brand for the "foreseeable future"(uh huh), and
does not "currently" have plans to make changes to the existing Dish
or Sling TV brands. Yeah.

Personally, I use Sling, because I find alternatives like YouTube TV
to be bloated and dramatically overpriced. I am cognizant however of
the fact that Echostar's debt is so large that Sling may perhaps
(maybe) have a slightly longer future now than it did without this
merger. Maybe.

I'll add that it was announced today that AT&T sold their interest in
DirecTV. Uh, no way that's a coincidence. -L
