Would AI lie?

I was asked on radio last night if I thought that AI would ever lie to
us. I replied that this of course opens up a bunch of questions, since
"lie" suggests purposeful misinformation, not accidental. And a "lie"
could be programmed by an AI's creators, or -- in theory -- by an AI
itself with the capability and motive to do so. Obviously we're not at
the latter stage yet. But I did say that if an AI ever did lie to us
of its own volition, it would be "a whole different ballgame." Indeed. -L
