Greetings. A number of alert readers have noted that in "The People
Respond: How to Deal with ICANN's TLDs Mess!" ( http://j.mp/foIYNu
[Lauren's Blog] ) I did not really specify my own preferred choice for
dealing with the ICANN-induced TLD situation. In fact, those
responses all pretty much related to suggested "short-term" reactions.
I did not explicitly mention one additional category:
"Long-Term Organized Bypass"
Regular readers most likely know where I stand regarding this entire
area. I am not a fan of litigation as a primary avenue to solve such
problems. Nor do I favor "attack scenarios" or ad hoc technical
approaches that risk Internet fragmentation.
Rather, it is my view that we need to working on a carefully
engineered and deployed non-centralized alternative to the existing
DNS/TLD ecosystem, that eventually may allow the existing TLD
domain-industrial complex to wither away. I've offered my IDONS
proposal (Internet Distributed Open Name System) as one possibility,
but it is not the only possible approach ( http://j.mp/h7T2gF [IDONS] ).
The genius of the Internet in this context is that alternative,
organized methodologies to deal with this situation can be developed
and deployed without needing the permission or cooperation of any
central authorities. Especially with the support of a few major
Internet enterprises, such a project could be operational for testing
in relatively short order, though full deployment would be a long term
effort in parallel with the existing DNS/TLD environment for a
very considerable period of time.
But we really need to get started on this right now!
