This is an excellent read.
A particularly interesting aspect of this first installment is its
quite appropriate highlighting of RAND's role in the development of
ARPANET/Internet.
Many years ago, I was affiliated at various times with RAND, and I
liked to say that RAND had this special characteristic of telling
clients the truth -- even when the details probably weren't what those
parties had hoped for in the resulting reports.
RAND's early work with UNIX (if memory serves, we were the first
non-AT&T entity other than educational institutions to have a UNIX
source license) and NCP -- the predecessor of TCP/IP -- also played very
important roles among many other associated contributions.
