Why I'm sending out Giffords, Palin, McCain items today

Greetings. You can call this an Administrivia item if you wish.
I've had a couple of people ask me why I'm sending out these items on
the list today related to the tragedy in Tucson -- no nexus with
privacy, they claim ...
I beg to differ. Even if I didn't take a rather expansive view of
issues that touched on privacy and related concerns (which I obviously
do, as regular readers know), today's events wouldn't even be a close
call.
Privacy issues involve much more than bits and bytes, Google and Bing,
and whether or not your next door neighbor is pointing a camera into
your bedroom.
For me, it is pretty much an ultimate violation of persons' privacy
to publicly display materials and make statements that obviously
create the risk -- whether intended or not -- of inciting radical or
simply deranged viewers and listeners into violence against "targeted"
persons.
I'll leave it at that for now, except to say that while you're of
course free to disagree with me about this, if you can't understand
why I feel this way, perhaps this list isn't the right venue for you.
For everyone else, your continued willingness to endure my missives
and other postings is, as always, greatly appreciated.
