Hello,
As a new subscriber, I thought that, in accordance with the wishes of
the list administrator, it would be nice to say who I am, and what my
interest in IDS is.
I am a Network Administrator, that manages a small LAN that is to very
soon become a small WAN and I am primarily interested in ensuring that the
network operates as smoothly as possible.
For our users, the system need only work in most cases, and any failures
puts them of using our technology instantly.

I supervise a small Data Processing Department for a California County Mental
Health Services Department. We have just started the process of expading our
small isolated LAN into a county wide Frame Relay network and are now faced with
questions about security we did not have to consider before. There is also
the very real possibility that we will have a permanant presence on the Internet
within the next year. As a result of these changes, I have subscribed to
several different computer security/privacy oriented news lists.
We will have on our local portion of the network Digital VAX's running VMS,
a WindowsNT server and, of course, pc's. We are interested in collecting
information on firewalls, and other security measures.
If there is anyone who is dealing with the issues of Internet connection in
relation to Federal and State mandated privacy for Medical/Mental Health/Drug
Alcahol Rehabilitation records I would be glad to here from them.
