ed the Scalpel
Dr. John Adler isn=E2=80=99t your typical neurosurgeon. Sure, he trained at=
Harvard and Stanford, and yes, he=E2=80=99s performed countless delicate s=
urgeries, but perhaps his most daring operation wasn=E2=80=99t in the OR at=
all. It was in the lab, where he invented the _CyberKnife_, a robotic radi=
osurgery system that can zap tumors with sub-millimeter precision, without =
so much as lifting a scalpel.
Back in the 1990s, Adler realized that traditional brain surgery, however r=
efined, still involved cracking open skulls. That didn=E2=80=99t sit well w=

So he combined robotics, real-time imaging, and software wizardry to create=
a system that could treat tumors non-invasively. The CyberKnife became a g=
ame-changer in oncology, especially for patients with brain, spine, and lun=
g cancers who now had a gentler (and frankly cooler-sounding) alternative.
Adler founded Accuray Inc. to commercialize the technology, and while the s=
tartup world can be as risky as brain surgery, his gamble paid off, thousan=
ds of CyberKnife units are now in use around the world. Later, he founded _=
Zap Surgical_ to further push the envelope of radiosurgery with even more c=
ompact and cost-efficient systems.
Off the surgical grid, Adler has taught at Stanford, mentored innovators, a=
nd served as a blunt voice for reform in medical technology. The man may ha=
ve ditched the scalpel, but he never lost his edge.

U.S. Patent No. 217,909, granted on July 29, 1879, to F.W. Smith and J.S. S=
hannon, might seem like a footnote in history, but it=E2=80=99s a surprisin=
gly important one. Titled simply as a =E2=80=9Cpaper-holder,=E2=80=9D this =
invention emerged during a time when American offices were undergoing rapid=
transformation. Typewriters, ledgers, and an explosion of paperwork were r=
edefining business, and clerks needed tools to keep up.
Smith and Shannon=E2=80=99s design introduced a practical solution: a devic=
e that could firmly hold papers upright and visible, freeing up the hands o=
f the user. This made reading, copying, and organizing documents far easier=
, a small convenience that had a big impact on office productivity. Today, =
we=E2=80=99d recognize it as an ancestor of the modern document stand.

t. The paper-holder was an early nod to ergonomic thinking, long before the=
word was commonplace. By improving posture and workflow, it quietly addres=
sed efficiency and comfort in daily clerical tasks.
Beyond its direct utility, the paper-holder helped pave the way for a broad=
er category of desktop accessories, clipboards, easels, and even monitor st=
ands that we now take for granted. It reflected a growing awareness that to=
