Hey everyone,

I would like to address Catherine's questions about me before I go before
the Senate tonight for the hearing.
I want to join the UA because I am genuinely interested in what the UA
does. I really want to get involved with the issues at hand and help out
with the current and future ventures of the UA. Not only do I think it'll be
fun and interesting, but I also think I'll learn a lot about the Institute,
which I already have from the exec meetings and the budget meeting last
week.
After seeing last year what the UA is all about, such as during issues
like dining, I wanted to apply for any sort of position to get involved and
hands-on experience. However, because I was a freshman and it was my first
semester on grades, I didn't know how much time I could allocate to the UA
and what my schedule would be like. This is why I applied for the UA, and
specifically the Communications Committee, during the summer.
I wanted to join CommComm because this is one area I truly believe I can
make a solid contribution. Regarding past leadership experience, I was part
of the student government as a senator for all four years of high school.
This is another reason why I wanted to continue getting involved in
government. Furthermore, I founded a club my sophomore year in high school
and publicized it well enough that I had approximately 150 members by the
end of that school year. Furthermore, I rowed my four years of high school
and rowed my freshmen year here at MIT. This experience has taught me a lot
about teamwork, which I think is essential to getting things done as a
committee. Lastly, I joined the debate team to compete in parliamentary
debate tournaments, which has helped me develop strong communication skills.

As for what I want to accomplish on CommComm, I mainly want to get
creative. For example, I want to restructure DormStorm, which I have already
started planning, so that it would be more meaningful and interactive with
students. I want to get the ideas of Community Conservations and Office
Hours going as soon as possible. These events will not only open more
channels of communication between the general student body, administration,
and UA leadership, but also boost the image of the UA. Finally, I look
forward to working with committees, senators, and all other UA officers in
publicizing events, connecting meaningfully with students, distributing
major information to the student body, etc.
Given the importance of making the student body aware of certain things,
I'm very excited and motivated to do a good job, set goals for this
committee, and get these goals accomplished. I look forward to meeting you
all and clarifying any questions you may have tonight.

Thank you so much for your time and I'm sorry that was such a long email!

Sincerely,

Aaron

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0current
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0phrasing is unclear.

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A04. I sat on Finboard during the appeals meeting as =
Senate's
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0representative, and will glady defend the allocatio=
ns if
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0people have any
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0questions.

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A05. The UA operating budget should be approved as it=
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0stands. Yes, I am
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0concerned that we are spending so much money on PLU=
S and
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Athletics
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Weekend, but think that should be a target for futu=
re
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0budgets, not the
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0current budget. I am glad that there are concrete p=
lans to
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0hand off PLUS
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0next year, and would like to see this promise held =
to.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Thus I am
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0considering authoring a bill requiring the manageme=
nt of
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0PLUS to be
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0handed over by next year as promised - is there sup=
port
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0among other
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0senators?

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A06. The election transparency act is a great bill. I=
would
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0have written
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0it myself if it hadn't been done already.

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A07. Suspending the minimum meeting interval is a nec=
essary
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0action for
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0this meeting, and this bill should be passed with n=
o fuss.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Perhaps we
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0should amend the Senate bylaws to allow for six day=
s, not
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0seven, between
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0meetings - is there support?

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Also, please look over the minutes if you haven&#39=
;t already
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0to make sure
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0we can vote on them quickly! We shouldn't need =
to spend
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0time in meetings
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0reading over past minutes since they're availab=
le beforehand.

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0That's all I can think of for now. Here's h=
oping for only
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0a three-hour
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0meeting tonight (/wishful thinking)...

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Respectfully,
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Catherine Olsson, Random Hall Senator
