Since we didn't come to a conclusion in our discussion tonight of some
sort of pan governmental working group --- listed on the Senate Agenda
as "Unified Student Voice group" --- I would like to continue the
discussion online in the (perhaps misguided) hope that we might come
somewhat closer to a positive resolution.
I respect the motivation of this idea. I am generally in favor of
making things work better even if they don't necessarily work
"correctly", which is what I understand this group is intended to do.
That said, I cannot support the idea as proposed, for the reasons
discussed tonight.
Here are the things which would make me okay with the idea:
1) The LGC should be included in this body.
2) This proposed group should made no claim to speak for the student
body. It's a meeting of 5 people to coordinate viewpoints, not a
representative body. Any statements of positions which this body
releases should be presented as the opinions of those individuals, not
of the student body.
3) The proposed group should be named in light of point 2. A name such
as the "Pan Governmental Working Group" (or similar) would be
acceptable; the name "Unified Student Voice group" is not.
If these issues are addressed, I will have no objection to such a group.
