Dear Senate,
After a productive summer of planning, the various UA committees have begun
to submit their operating budgets for Fall 2009. As you know, all of the
UA's financial matters fall under the Senate's jurisdiction, and Senate's
very first item of business when we convene in the fall is to approve the
UA's operating budget.
Prior to this, however, the Senate is required to form a Special Budgetary
Committee with the sole purpose of reviewing and refining the Operating
Budget. The committee consists of the UA President, the UA Vice-President,
the UA Treasurer, and three Senators. If you are interested in serving as
one of these three Senators, please let me know as soon as possible (with a
summary of your availability for the next week or so).
This committee is a fantastic way of helping shape the UA's policy and
programs for the upcoming semester, so please consider being involved.
Moreover, the impact-to-time-input ratio is very high; I expect that the
required commitment will be on the order of 2 hours. Although we are
currently considering meeting this Sunday, we will be flexible in working
with your schedule.
Thanks in advance! Hope classes are going well, and I look forward to
seeing many of you back in the Senate Chambers on October 5.

*Article IV: Procedures of the UA Senate*
Section 7. Approval of the UA Budget
"The Speaker shall chair a Special Budgetary Senate Committee consisting of
the UA President, the UA Vice-President, the UA Treasurer, and three
senators to be appointed by the Speaker. This committee shall review the UA
Operating Budget if one has been submitted by the Executive. If one has not
been prepared, the committee should create an Operating Budget. This
committee will meet with the Chairs of the standing committees or their
designees to determine an appropriate budget for the following term. This
budget will then be presented to the Senate for a vote."
Alex, UA Treasurer, is in the process of finalizing the budgets he has
received from the committee chairs. So just in case you were worried, be
assured that the committee will not have to create a budget from scratch.
