Hey Senate,
I mentioned some of these during the meeting on Monday, but I wanted to
mention it again and give you an opportunity to get involved in writing
some legislation.
legislation topics (more info below) I'm working on:
1. re-charging/re-tasking the ad-hoc Enrollment Committee
2. Fresh Fund combined bill
3. approval of HistComm Senate summaries for UAS 38-40
4. some line-item reallocations
5. looking at historical things for suggesstions
6. smaller funner more-internal things
I'm going to be in the office to work on writing these (and/or discussing
them) from 4-5pm tomorrow (well, today). I could also do earlier in the
afternoon or later that night (after 10). Or Saturday morning depending
on how early you're willing to wake up (legislation is due at noon). So
let me know if you're interested and can't do 4-5pm.
More info:
1. The original bill from fall '07 is at:
/mit/remeyer/Public/UA/History/UAS39/passedlegislation/pdf/39-1-5.pdf
The plans for the new bill: re-charge/task the committee based on
information from the last two years. It seems fairly set that enrollment
will be increased, so it seems more important (at least to some people)
for the committee to work on evaluating the impacts of increasing
enrollment and how the negative ones can be mitigated.
I think it would also be worthwhile to reset a timeline for the committee
and perhaps a process for forming a new iteration of the committee since
it seems near dead at this point.
2. ASA got requests from groups and we are working on making
recommendations to put together a combined request from Fresh Fund
(although we could do separate bills if you want to be able to approve
them separately... but you could amend one bill like a budget too - if
you care let me know).
3. HistComm has been working on making summaries of legislation from
passed years. This isn't really a formal report (like the reports some
other committees put together) but I'm thinking about what is the most
appropriate way to either present it to Senate or more formally submit it
or get it approved or what.
The summaries and all of the legislation they reference (or as much as we
could find) are in: http://web.mit.edu/remeyer/Public/UA/History/
We are also investigating the best ways to store all these files in the UA
locker and present them and the summaries on the website, so if you're
interested in doing some web design or just have suggestion let
ua-history-chairs@mit.edu know (or come by tomorrow).
4. Some little between line-items within a committee re-allocations.
I've heard of a few different things for a few different committees...
Easy bills to write if you're interested in getting some practice writing
legislation.
5. The previously mentioned legislation summaries are a good source of
ideas for both new things and old things that would be good to revive or
re-try. I'm happy to make suggestions of things to look at if you're
interested in a particular theme (ex: there were a lot of Saferide related
bills in UAS 39).
6. Mostly just something to practice writing legislation if you want
to... or if there's something small you want to write. Like... "I think
the website should have more pictures" or... Whatever, I don't have many
ideas on the top of my head.
Let me know if you have any questions or want to meet up a time besides
4-5pm.
