Hi all.
Jonte the past Speaker of the UA Senate is making sure I am doing all my
responsibilities. Specificly, Senate is responsible for approving all
the Chairs and Vice Chairs of the UA Committees as well as the officers
of the UA.
If you look at what he has quoted of the Constitution we need to review
everything that UA Exec has done since the beginning of the summer at
our next scheduled Senate meeting aka tomorrow. Senate, you should
decide whether you want to decide these appointments tomorrow or at our
next meeting. I personally think we should wait until the next meeting.
I altered the agenda to include Reviewing the Executive Committee and
allotted 30 minutes to it. At the meeting, you can decide what should be
done.
Cheers,
Will

Hi, Will:
I hope your semester's off to a good start.
Just as a reminder, by my count the following persons should also have
confirmation hearings at this meeting:
From last semester:
* Alexandria Hall, UA Treasurer
* Alexandria Hall, Chair of the Finance Board
* Ryan Normandin, Chair of the Events Committee (postponed)
From UA Exec agenda (dated 12-Sept):
- Approval of a new CIT (Catherine Fan)
- Approval of a vice chair for SCEP (Emily Zhao)
These confirmations must take place (and cannot be done by Exec pursuant
to the following):
UA Constitution <http://web.mit.edu/ua/governing-docs/constitution.pdf>,
Article II, Section B, Clause 1 (last two sentences)
All actions undertaken by the Executive Committee in lieu of Senate
will be subject to subsequent review by the Senate at its next
meeting. *These actions may not include* amending the Constitution,
Senate Bylaws or any other governing documents of the Undergraduate
Association, impeaching members of the Undergraduate Association,
*approving permanent officials of the Undergraduate Association*, or
approving the Operating Budget of the Undergraduate Association.
The nominations, however, were completely legal, so don't worry about those:
Senate Bylaws <http://web.mit.edu/ua/governing-docs/senate-bylaws.pdf>,
Article VI, Section C, Clause 1:
The UA Nominations Committee shall present the descriptions of
student advocates approved by NomComm for approval by a majority of
Senate, before the candidates are presented to the relevant
Institute committees for approval. *In the case that there is a
pressing need for an Institute Committee representative and Senate
is not currently in session* (e.g. during IAP or summer breaks), the
UA Principal Officers shall approve the nominees.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Jonté Craighead

Hello all,
Remember our next meeting is at 7:30PM this Monday.
Here is the current agenda
<http://web.mit.edu/ua/senate/43UAS/1/43UAS1%20Agenda.pdf> for the
meeting.
There are really 4 things we will be doing.
1. I will be giving an introduction to the formal rules of Senate.
2. We will be passing a budget.
3. Allan, the UA President interviewed and nominated Laura Royden
for the UA Committee on Alumni Relations. We will be deciding
whether to approve her.
4. Officially approving the 43UAS SB1 minutes.
Most of the discussion on topics 2, 3, and 4 can occur online. Ask
questions or if you think something pass say so. Also, please ask me
any questions about other things.
See you Monday,
Will
