Hi, everyone:

I hope you've used this week to re-energize and meet with your constituents=
.
Here are a few things to keep in mind over the next few days:

*Committee Participation
*If you have not already, *please send ua-senate-officers@mit.edu the name
of the UA or Institute Committee on which you will be serving this semester=
*.
At our next meeting, I will be asking for everyone to mention their chosen
committee(s) along with any project they will be working on as a member of
that committee. I cannot stress enough how important it is for every Senato=
r
to be on a committee--the policy work we do on the Senate floor can become
very tiring without the occasional diversion of working individually on a
project that your truly care about. Furthermore, committee membership is on=
e
of the many ways we maintain oversight (contrary to popular belief, the
committees belong to you, the Senate). I would prefer not to enforce this
too directly this semester, but I definitely will if you make it necessary.

*Senate Caucus on Student Engagement*
As agreed, we will have another Senate caucus this Saturday to discuss
student engagement and prepare for the Chairman's visit to Senate on Monday=
.
From the e-mails I've seen, it looks like the time may still be up in the
air. If not enough people (>10) fill out the
Doodle<http://www.doodle.com/aivk4a3kwx4zqk58>by 5:00pm tomorrow, I
will set the time for noon as we have the past couple
of weeks. It is very important that every Senator make an effort to attend.
*In fact, if you do not attend Saturday's caucus, please make an effort to
let me know why you did not*. I certainly believe it is reasonable for your
constituents to expect you to prepare in some manner for such an important
guest speaker. I am willing to provide a recap for anyone absent during my
office hours on Sunday.

In advance of our meeting please read up on the Corporation and our Guest
(same links from my e-mail to undergrads). I really found the MIT 150
interview to be useful; read the transcript if you don't have two hours to
spare (I certainly didn't):

   - MIT Corporation Website: About the MIT Corporation

   - The Tech: Reed is new chairman

   - A Brief History and Workings of the MIT
Corporation<http://web.mit.edu/fnl/volume/185/mead.html>(MIT Faculty
Newsletter, May/June, 2006)

*Vice Speaker*
We will hold a final nomination and elections round for Vice Speaker at
Monday's meeting. Since this will be our third meeting without a Vice
Speaker, *I will not entertain motions to postpone the election to a later
date*. As before, I encourage those interested to meet with me if you have
any questions or concerns about your qualifications. In all likelihood,
you're probably qualified, and we can teach you what you need to know.

*Senate Constituency Communication Events*
Last semester we had an issue with too many events being clustered at the
end of the term. Many of you now have experience running these events, so I
encourage you to strike out and gather student feedback now, while we have
an opportunity to act on the desires of undergraduates. Believe it or not,
the end of the semester approaches quickly, especially with spring break an=
d
CPW around the corner-- don't miss out on the opportunity to engage your
constituents. *We had a record number of 11 events last semester, and I
would like to see us roundly beat that number.*

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you
all on Saturday.

Thanks,
Jont=E9 Craighead
