Hi guys, has any progress been made on discussion for orientation? After
mulling it over for a while, it seems to me that the big issue is the
squeeze in time between the earliest point that students are allowed to
arrive on campus if they're not participating in an FPOP or a sport, and th=
e
time at which the housing lottery closes. I think a reasonable compromise
would be for the admistration/housing office to keep the arrival date for
all freshman the same (was it Friday last year?). If students think they'l=
l
need the usual 3ish days to figure out where they want to live, then they
will still have the opportunity to arrive earlier than Sunday to walk
around, get to know the dorms, etc. If a frosh is comfortable with where
they're going to live, they can arrive whenever they want during the
weekend, either to explore MIT/Cambridge/Boston if they get here early, or
arrive at the last possible moment before the check-in table closes.
This wouldn't put any additional strain on the housing office/staff that
prepares the dorms, since it wouldn't be a departure from the current
system. If this ends up being the case though, we need to make sure a clea=
r
message is sent to the incoming class that they can arrive whenever they
want during the weekend depending on what they want to do, and avoid giving
them the impression that they shouldn't arrive until convocation.
If you don't move the move-in date but start official orientation events
later, you're just shifting the responsibility of participating in REX to
the incoming freshmen class. If they want it, it is there for them. Its
not forced upon them, and the opportunity is not taken away from them at
all. To me, this embodies the
choose-for-yourself-because-we're-all-grown-up mentality that we strive to
keep at MIT.
