use_office_for: The UA uses our office for a variety of purposes. First of all, it is a meeting room. The UA's umbrella includes about a dozen active standing committees and four Class Councils, as well as a handful of ad hoc committees. All of these committees meet at least biweekly; most meet weekly. Having a dedicated, consistent space for these meetings is absolutely invaluable. Secondly, it is a great place to work on UA projects, ranging from writing reports to compiling survey data. In a similar vein, since committee chairs and Senators are often working in the office, undergraduates can come by to offer suggestions or ask questions. Being able to direct people to a specific, physical office is incredibly useful. We also use 401 and the adjoining suites (401a, 401b, 401c) for private meetings - for example, interviews for the Institute Committees - or in order to have multiple committee meetings going on at the same time, without interfering with each other. !
Finally, the room is occasionally used in social settings as well - for instance, UA members watching football or baseball together on our TV (which is primarily used for projecting slides during Exec meetings). Overall, the time used for socializing is very small compared to the time used for meetings and other business. The room's position is also important, since it adjoins (and connects to) W20-400, Senate Chambers, which is used every Monday for Senate meetings, as well as for other UA events.
store_in_office: The UA possesses a number of workstations, which are held in the office. The official UA archives are also stored here. Occasionally, committees may need to store event materials or promotional handouts in the office. Very frequently, some section of the office is in use by one or more of the Class Councils for their events.

group_activities: As mentioned above, the UA holds many committee meetings each week. In addition, our committees plan and execute a number of large-scale events and initiatives each year, including Fall Festival, Spring Weekend, Student-Faculty Dinners, DormStorm, Wellness Week, Athletics Weekend, the Nominations Banquet, Ring Delivery, Ring Premiere, and numerous events from the Class Councils. Fall Festival and Spring Weekend are both organized by the Events Committee; both events are actually a community-building series of events designed for all undergraduates. Student-Faculty Dinners are organized by the Student Committee on Educational Policy (SCEP) and involve students signing up to take a faculty member out to dinner. DormStorm is organized by the Communications Committee (formerly known as the PR Committee) in order to help undergraduates meet UA members; it takes place in the dormitories and outside the Student Center. Wellness Week is organized by the Commit!
tee on Student Life in the spring to promote student health. Athletics Weekend is organized by the Committee on Athletics to celebrate MIT's athleticism. The Nominations Banquet is held annually in the spring to celebrate the contributions of the outgoing student nominees to the various Institute Committees and welcome the new nominees. Ring Delivery and Ring Premiere are organized by the class's Ring Committee. Finally, the Class Councils organize a variety of events that change very year, ranging from simple study breaks to nights out in Boston. This list is not necessarily exhaustive, especially since the UA's programming is constantly being improved.
in_5_years: This question is difficult to answer, since the state of MIT and the undergraduate body is always changing. We certainly hope that we will continue to serve the student body even more effectively than we are now, but we are always open to hearing ways we can improve. Currently, committee involvement is very high, and hopefully will remain at the same level for the next 5 years or longer. We have discussed removing some committee, so it's not clear whether our executive board will become smaller, larger, or stay about the same.
