Funded with a $20M gift plus matching funds pledge, the Gordon-MIT =
Engineering Leadership Program (GEL) works with juniors and seniors in a =
combination of class and laboratory activities develop their engineering =
leadership abilities. Now in its third year, the program is up to =
almost 100 students and is very successful. If you're not familiar with =
the program, more information is available at mit.edu/gordonelp. Also, =
at the end of this e-mail is the text of a letter that we've sent to =
students that includes a bit of program description.
Many of the leadership attributes we develop are similar to the skills =
of a good athletic leader. With this in mind, we invite you to nominate =
exemplary undergraduate engineering students to apply to next year's GEL =
program. The program is open to current sophomores and juniors, as well =
as to seniors in M.Eng. programs.

We are eager to receive nominations from you and your colleagues. We =
will follow up by sending the student a personalized invitation. We =
have found that many students are honored to be nominated, and it often =
influences them toward joining the program.

For reference, we anticipate over 100 applications for the GEL One Year =
program. The application deadline is 28 February, so time is fairly =
short. As a rule of thumb, you could nominate up to 10% of your =
sophomores and 10% of your juniors, which would produce an applicant =
pool on the order of 100 students.
