Dear students,
I’m pleased to announce that Gustavo Burkett has been named the Senior
Associate Dean for Diversity and Community Involvement. In this
expansive role, Gustavo will lead a group of dynamic, high-profile
programs including the Student Activities Office—comprising Leadership
and Engagement Programs with Leah Flynn-Gallant, LBGTQ Services with
Abigail Francis, and Multicultural Programs with La-Tarri Canty—the PKG
Center and Ideas Global Challenge with Kate Trimble, the Hobby Shop with
Hayami Arakawa, and the Campus Activities Complex with Phil Walsh. For
some time, Phil has ably managed the Diversity and Community Involvement
group on an interim basis, and I want to thank him for his hard work.
Additionally, to strengthen cross-collaboration around diversity and
community building, the Religious Life and the Chaplains area is now
aligned with the diversity and community team. The Chaplain to the
Institute will continue to sit on the senior staff and will have a dual
reporting relationship to me.
Because the DSLx Life Learning Initiative aims to support all of our
departments in creating online tools for educating and supporting
students, Sally Susnowitz will report to Peter Cummings as part of the
administration team, and she will work more closely with Matthew Bauer
in Communications.
Currently the director of student involvement at Boston College, Gustavo
brings more than 15 years of experience in higher education to this
important role. In addition to his position at BC, Gustavo has worked in
student engagement positions at UNC Charlotte, and the University of
Maine, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in business management and a
Master’s in Education. Gustavo is working toward his PhD in higher
education administration with a concentration in social justice from
UMass Boston.
A native of Argentina, Gustavo has a unique perspective on life as an
international student, having spent a year in high school in Maine …
arriving before he spoke English! He subsequently returned to attend
UMaine as a transfer student, graduating in 2002. He has been in the
U.S. ever since, and applies his experiences as an immigrant and an
openly gay man to teaching students about diversity and inclusion.
In addition to his professional activities, Gustavo shows exceptional
leadership on issues including LBGTQ, inclusion, alcohol and other
drugs, suicide prevention, tobacco cessation, FSILGs, hazing, and
leadership education. He also maintains close ties to UMaine as a member
of their alumni association board, and president of his alumni class.
This is an important new role for our division and the Institute, and
I’m thrilled for Gustavo to begin his work with these dedicated
colleagues, and the many students they support. Please join me in
welcoming Gustavo to DSL and MIT.

the director of student involvement at Boston
College, Gustavo brings more than 15 years of experience in
higher education to
this important role. In addition to his position at BC, Gustavo
has worked in
student engagement positions at UNC Charlotte, and the
University of Maine,
where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in business management and a
Master’s in
Education. Gustavo is working toward his PhD in higher education
administration
with a concentration in social justice from UMass Boston.<o:p></o:p></font></p>

native of Argentina, Gustavo has a unique perspective
on life as an international student, having spent a year in high
school in
Maine … arriving before he spoke English! He subsequently
returned to attend
UMaine as a transfer student, graduating in 2002. He has been in
the U.S. ever
since, and applies his experiences as an immigrant and an openly
gay man to
teaching students about diversity and inclusion.<o:p></o:p></font></p>

addition to his professional activities, Gustavo shows
exceptional leadership on issues including LBGTQ, inclusion,
alcohol and other
drugs, suicide prevention, tobacco cessation, FSILGs, hazing,
and leadership
education. He also maintains close ties to UMaine as a member of
their alumni
association board, and president of his alumni class.<o:p></o:p></font></p>
