Subject: Concerning Murals and Recent Events in BC
To: bc-undergrads@mit.edu

Over this summer, a number of murals and fixtures were removed from Burton
1 and Burton Third upon request of the Housemaster. We hope this letter
will help the undergraduate community of Burton Conner to better understand
the recent actions taken in our home, the process by which they occurred
and the current state of our relationship with the house team.

*
*

The first of the mural removals occurred on Burton Third, and was initially
framed as part of standard renovations. As during past renovations, Ken
asked the floor in late May to give him a list of murals they=92d like to
preserve. The floor chairs responded with a list, copying Anne, and Ken
indicated receipt of the message. There was no further communication from
the house team before the changes occurred.

Anne has stated that in June 2013, she surveyed and photographed the wall
art on all 9 floors, and only found offensive material on Burton 3rd.
Students were not informed that this survey was happening, nor were the
results openly announced. No murals on Burton 1 were found offensive at
this time.

*
*

On July 29, residents of Burton 3rd discovered that several murals,
including five on the list sent to Ken and Anne, had been painted over or
modified without any notification from the house team. The floor chairs
emailed Ken the same day to ask for a full list of changes. Ken responded
to this email with the complete list, copying the rest of the house team,
but nobody offered an explanation for the murals' removal.

*
*

There was no more significant communication until after the Tech article
about the murals and bar, when Burton 3rd emailed Anne directly:

*
*

=93The way things were handled left an entire floor of students feeling lik=
e
they were attacked,

despite there being positive intentions.=94

*
*

They then raised two separate issues: the removals themselves, and the
failure to communicate with the floor about the changes. To the former,
Anne cited various legal and MIT policy violations and informed the floor
that they could appeal her decisions to various MIT and legal authorities.

*
*

On the matter of communication, Anne felt compelled to act immediately, but
did not inform the residents. In response to the issue of lack of
communication, she stated, =93At no time did I ever ask residents of the
floor =91what [they] wanted to preserve=92. If you did receive such an ema=
il
invitation from someone, I would be most grateful to see it,=94 although sh=
e
had been copied to the thread about which murals should be kept. She also
stated that Burton Third should not have expected any of their murals to
stay.

*
*

Despite this, Anne stated a desire to work with residents of Burton Conner
to find a way for students to express themselves in a more positive way. In
an attempt to understand Anne=92s position and move forward, two students o=
n
Burton Third asked about the Penny Arcade mural on Burton 1 (which had not
been found offensive during Anne=92s June 2013 survey, making it perfectly
clear they did not think the mural should be removed. A few hours later,
Anne had the mural immediately painted over and emailed the students saying=
:

*
*

=93Apropos your conversation with Michelle earlier today when you expressed
concern about a mural on Burton 1 that contained violent language which
communicates a threat of taking another's life, please be assured that Bill
and I addressed this concern as quickly as was possible as indicated in the
email below. Thank you for your diligence and we trust that you will bring
other wall art to the attention of Ken, Michelle, or ourselves if you have
any other similar concerns.=94

*
*

This was not the desired result, as the Penny Arcade mural was brought up
simply as an example to understand Anne=92s rationale. After this, Burton
Third became more cautious in their communications with Anne, hoping to
prevent future incidents.

*
*

Currently, all students (from Burton Third or otherwise) are not permitted
to discuss the mural removals with Anne. In an email to GRTs, Anne stated:

*
*

=93MIT apologized to Anne that she has been the subject of vilification and
ongoing pressure by some students for her actions. MIT acknowledged that
this could be viewed as retaliatory toward Anne for raising a Title IX
issue, which would in itself be a violation of Title IX if the Institute
did not address it immediately. So from now on, at the request of MIT, all
student inquiries regarding this matter that cannot be handled through
GRT-student discussions at the floor level, should be referred to Dean
Baker, not to Anne.=94

*
*

As far as we are aware, GRTs have not been involved in decisions regarding
the removal of offensive material.

*
*

All information presented above has been collected from email conversations
- we have done our best to accurately report on these correspondences. We
have collected a number of emails which served as our sources. You may
view them here<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oMWtyQOzdajfbdKIvTwNzy2q=
QDg9rTrMxmJcDwzu7vI/edit?usp=3Dsharing>
.

*
*

We hope you find this letter informative, and that it will encourage
discussion about the importance of communication between students and the
house team in decision-making. We would also like to make it clear that
this letter is not meant to attack Anne or the reasons why the murals were
removed; we simply want students to know what the process was.

*
*

Finally, we ask that questions or comments regarding the information
provided here be directed to bc-information@mit.edu. If you have questions
regarding Title IX that cannot be resolved without speaking to the
administration, those questions should be directed to Dean Baker, as stated
above.
