Hi everyone,
NomComm is seeking two representatives for the MacVicar Advisory Committee,
which helps select a faculty member each year for the MacVicar Faculty
Fellowship. See below for more details. Please forward this to your
constituencies or any friends who you feel would be well-suited for this
position. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please reply
to ua-nomcomm@mit.edu with brief answers to the following questions by
Saturday (Dec. 5).
1. Why do you want to serve on the MacVicar Advisory Committee?
2. Please describe any relevant experience you have (i.e. working in a
committee setting, reviewing applications for awards).
3. What qualities will you look for in candidates for the MacVicar
Fellowship and why?
4. Describe a strong relationship you have developed with a faculty member.
How did it develop, and what have you gained from the relationship?
5. The committee will have one meeting in mid-to-late January. Will you be
on campus during IAP?
Let me know if you have any questions.
Jacob Bredthauer
Chair, UA Nominations Committee
"As you may know, the MacVicar Faculty Fellows program was established in
1992 to honor the memory of Margaret MacVicar '64, Sc.D. '67, Professor of
Physical Science, and Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Education. Among man=
y
other accomplishments, Dean MacVicar established the Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Program (UROP) in 1969 (still going strong at 40!) and, at th=
e
time of her death in 1991, was serving as the Institute=92s first Dean for
Undergraduate Education. She is remembered as a dedicated champion for a
comprehensive undergraduate education that included a focus on the person,
on one occasion remarking, "Our purpose is to direct the best minds toward
inquiries and enterprises concerned for the human condition." She also
played a key role at the Institute in expanding the breadth and diversity o=
f
the admissions process.
Thus, the MacVicar Faculty Fellowship, a ten-year appointment, recognizes
faculty who have made exemplary and sustained contributions to the teaching
and education of undergraduates at MIT. In the fall of each academic year,
the community is invited to nominate members of the faculty for this honor.
Each winter, an ad hoc Advisory Committee =96 made up of the Dean for
Undergraduate Education, two MacVicar Fellows, two additional faculty
members, and two undergraduate students =96 is responsible for carefully
reading the confidential materials submitted on behalf of each nominee,
meeting to review the nominees and their accomplishments, and preparing a
formal recommendation of candidates to the Provost who will make the final
decision on naming new Fellows.
More details about the Fellowship and the nomination process are available
at http://web.mit.edu/provost/macvicar/."
