I've installed knews, an Xwindows-based threaded newsreader, in the
outland locker for Ultrix, Solaris, AIX, IRIX, Linux, and NetBSD/i386.
My experience so far is that knews is well-designed and reflects a
thoughtful study of existing newsreader interfaces, synthesizing many
of the good interface features of xrn, trn, and tin. knews displays a
reply tree of articles which you can navigate through with the arrow
keys, and allows you to move in and out of newsgroups and threads
using the left and right arrow keys.

knews also supports multiple news servers with separate .newsrc files
(it will use just .newsrc for the server news.mit.edu).

knews is currently at release 0.9.3, and there are a few minor flaws
in the user interface (no keyboard command for catchup, no keyboard
command for reading the next unread article in a thread, no way of
finding all the keyboard shortcuts for a given mode, exiting a group
after "find group" drops you into "all groups displayed" mode even if
you were only displaying subscribed groups before). Hopefully, these
flaws will be corrected by a 1.0 release later. Some time in the
spring, knews may migrate to the sipb locker.

Bug reports should go to bug-outland@mit.edu or to the author of the
program (kjj@matematik.su.se). Enjoy.
