I've installed TeXmacs on Athena for Sun and Linux. TeXmacs is a
freely distributable "scientific text editor" that allows wysiwyg
representation of scientific and mathematical notation embedded inside
documents. Certain symbolic algebra applications can be run within it
(notably maxima, which is also available on Athena).

To run it:

	add texmacs
	texmacs

Besides the help available within the application, you can find links to
other documentation and tutorials from

http://web.mit.edu/acs/www/text.html#TexMacs

TexMacs uses Tex fonts, and at various points may pause for some time
to build them. It puts user-specific configuration settings in a
directory ~/.TeXmacs.

maxima can be invoked from within TexMacs, via Insert -> session -> maxima.
