I've updated MATLAB on Athena to 8.4/R2014b. From my message to users:
Matlab 8.4 has been installed (they also call it R2014b). This is a
major update, with many new features. Release notes are at
http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/release-notes.html
and a description of the new graphics system is at
http://www.mathworks.com/products/matlab/matlab-graphics/index.html

Known issue: in the internal help browser, printing may not work.
Workaround: use option to open page in browser, and print from the
browser.
To run 8.4 now:
add matlab
matlab -ver 8.4 (terminal window interface)
matlab -ver 8.4 -desktop (Java GUI)
It will be made the default version after the end of the current
semester.
