I've installed MATLAB 8.1 (R2013a) on Athena. From my message to uses:
Matlab 8.1 has been installed (they also call it R2013a). Many of the
Toolboxes have been updated (use Matlab "ver" command for versions).
A set of emacs modes is available in the newemacs/matlab-emacs
subdirectory; see
https://web.mit.edu/matlab_v8.1/newemacs/www/index.shtml

Release notes are available in the internal help system, or at the
Mathworks Web site:

Known issue: in the internal help browser, external http links and
printing
don't work. Workaround: go to http://www.mathworks.com/help/index.html
in
firefox or chromium-browser.
To run 8.1 now:
add matlab
matlab -ver 8.1
It will be made the default version after the end of the current term.
