Good morning,
Information Services & Technology (IS&T) has updated the Virtual Machines (=
VMs) we provide preloaded with Windows 7 SP1, security updates and bundles =
of software for different segments of the MIT community.
There are two flavors, one for administrative staff and one for students. T=
he administrative staff VM is supported only on Macintosh host machines as =
a way to access Windows-only software. The student VM is designed to be us=
ed on Windows or Macintosh host machines, but an extra step is required to =
configure the full features on Windows.
Download and Setup
You can download the VM and set your username, password and access administ=
rative- or student-focused Windows software without needing to install Wind=
ows or the included applications.
To obtain the appropriate VM and documentation, visit the Available Softwar=
e page at
http://ist.mit.edu/software-hardware
Select Virtualization in the What's it for? menu, and click Search.
(Certificates required to download)
Please note that in order to use these VMs, you must have VMware Workstatio=
n 8.0 or later (for Windows or Linux) or VMware Fusion 4.1 or later (for Ma=
cintosh) installed and working beforehand. These WMware products are availa=
ble from the same software list.
Documentation
(NOTE: included are important instructions with regard to McAfee and Virtua=
l Machines on the Macintosh platform)
As you wait for these very large VMs (4+ GB compressed) to download, please=
read through the short
Introduction to the Administrative Staff Virtual Machine
http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/IYCkBQ
Introduction to the Student Virtual Machine
http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/H4CkBQ
Support
The IS&T Help Desk is ready to assist you in setting up these VMs or using =
the supported software in them. You can contact the Help Desk at (617) 253-=
1101 or helpdesk@mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk@mit.edu>.
IS&T plans to release new versions of these virtual machines twice a year a=
t the start of each semester. These releases will include updated versions =
of software with security and anti-virus patches applied. We welcome feedba=
ck about the included software and settings.
We hope these VMs will benefit you and the communities you support.
Thanks,
Jon

Important: IS&T staff will *NEVER* ask you for your password nor send email=
requesting it. The bogus emails and phone calls asking for your password =
are Phishing attempts to compromise your email.
